REEP has made a big step in training of her staff and beneficiaries on Project Management and Evaluation (PM&E). The staff training which took 3 days starting from 23rd Jan 2012, was just accomplished recently on 25th January 2012. The beneficiaries training targeted our beneficiaries involved in enterprises and was held back in mid December 2011.

The beneficiaries' training was specifically designed to assist the in the proper management of their projects and evaluation of their progress. The training was supported by Lutheran World Relief.

Likewise, the PM&E training REEP undertook for her staff recently will go a great way in increasing staff performance and production. The staff will be able to successfully manage and perform internal evaluations for the projects run by REEP. These will enable us to offer even better services to our beneficiaries and be able to evaluate the impact on individuals and the communities at large. The training was supported by Lutheran World Relief and International Child Support (ICS)

REEP has resorted to educating the community on issues affecting children through theatre. REEP has contracted a group of young men mainly bicycle taxi cyclists called Okudo Theatre Group. They are first made aware of issues affecting children through a short training that takes less than a day. They then form short plays on the same. They them accompany REEP paralegals and counsellors during community outreaches. While the paralegals teach the legal aspects of child protection, the actors make it practical through drama. The organization has reached over 12,000 people with this strategy in the last three months. Impact is manifested by the high numbers of cases reported after the outreaches.

Earlier during the third term of 2011, 60 teachers-(patrons of the rights clubs) were  trained on children rights, psychosocial/child counselling, SCREAM Methodology to help them run the clubs effectively and reduce incidences of school dropout due to child pregnancy , child marriages and orphanhood.

Apart from the teachers who were trained on issues relating to the child, 200 parents-100 in Butula district and 100 in Nambale district were trained on parenting.

With this holistic approach targeting all the stake holders, REEP has seen a great increase in the number of cases of abuse being reported by teachers, parents and the children themselves. We are optimistic that we shall help in creating a safer environment for children.

This December, REEP through support of our different partners supported a total of 154 children from various primary schools in Butula and Nambale to go through holiday camp trainings where children were trained on children rights, child labour and psycho social. Through ICS , 90 children were trained in a residential workshop on children rights and self awareness for three days at Magnet primary school. Children who were all members of the Child rights clubs initiated early this year were taken through different topics among them the definition of Child rights clubs. The functions of the child rights club, the rights and responsibilities of a child, child abuse and forms of child abuse, how to identify abuse, what to do in case of abuse . Children were able to identified the different forms of child abuse they have faced as children highest being emotional and physical abuse. Privately a number of children shared their experience in sexual abuse. In a rare turn of events,  a 15 year old boy narrated how he was being sexually abused by a 37 year old widow while he thought he was the one benefitting because the woman gave him money. The boy promised never to go back to the widows house again. Asked why he now wanted to stop, he said he was ashamed of himself, he had embarrassed those close to him especially his parents, he was compromising his education and wasting his time.
